Abby's Story

Name: Abby Haus Juris

Abby Haus Juris, a Liedo daughter, was well on her way to becoming a therapy dog when tragedy struck. At just two years old, Abby needed surgery to repair a herniated disc in her back. During the surgery, the veterinarian severed nerves to Abby's bladder, bowel, right leg and tail. Faced with doctors advising euthanasia because her condition was so grave, her human parents knew a Liedo daughter had to have spirit and resilience. They choose to give Abby a chance despite many people telling them that "she's just a dog". Abby had already made a difference in the lives of children who have suffered sexual abuse prior to the surgeon's mistake. Initially, specialists told Abby's parents she would always be incontinent and may need to have her tail amputated. With hard work, exercise and a belief in Abby, she is now able to micturate on her own with an occasional manual expression of her bladder. Her right leg strengthened with exercise and therapy and although her tail wags to the left-it wags! She still needs to wear a diaper, but, Abby is very happy and recently became a certified therapy dog through Paws for Friendship, Inc. They welcomed a disabled dog, unlike every other therapy program in the United States. Abby is a true representative of "the golden middle" and has been called a medical miracle.
